Mr. P is the white teacher in the reservation school. Arnold threw the geometry book at him by mistake. Mr. P convinces Arnold that he is a fighter and must leave the reservation to live. Indirectly, Mr.P is the source of light who showed him the road to success.

Arnold would always seek his grandmother's advice and support . She is powwow famous, and loved to watch the dance. She is the spirit of tradition and the past . Her greatest gift is tolerance. When she is struck by a drunk driver, her dying words ask that Gerald, the man who hit her, be forgiven.

Rowdy is Arnold's best friend, at the reservation. As his name indicates, he's a pretty tough guy.He is long and lean and strong like a snake. Rowdy sticks up for Arnold, but he also pushes Arnold around from time to time. Rowdy's father abuses him, which explains his bullying behavior. After Arnold joins the school for Whites, it is doubtful weather they are still friends.

Arnold Spirit, Sr and Agnes Adams Spirit are Arnold's parents. They are both alcoholics, though they are always encouraging their son. They are not abusive like Rowdy's parents.If they would have listened to their dreams and worked for them, Mr. Spirit could have been a jazz musician and Mrs. Spirit could have been a community college teacher.But unfortunately this did not happen.

The family nick named her Mary Runs Away.Mary leaves her home in Wellpinit and runs away to Montana to marry a Flathead Indian. She is in the process of writing her life story, though she doesn't get to complete her book as she dies in an accidental trailer fire.
